Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning) is sending his “January Grants Action News Update” to residents, organizations and local governments about a series of grants available from the state, federal government and private entities. Each month, the Assembly provides an updated list of grants for a variety of categories.

“During a time of economic recovery, grants can play an integral part in helping our local communities complete needed infrastructure repairs or support under-funded projects,” said Palmesano. “Many people don’t realize the scope of available opportunities because they aren’t sure where to look. The ‘Grants Action News’ bulletin makes finding these grants much easier by consolidating the information and making it available to everyone. I hope residents, organizations and local governments throughout the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions will be able to use this resource to find much-needed support to strengthen communities in our rural area.”

The Grants Action News bulletin is updated at the beginning of each month with newly-available grants and information on how to apply. State Grants

New York State Agriculture and Markets

Soil and Water Conservation Districts working in partnership with regional watershed groups/coalitions are invited to submit applications for funding under the Community Resiliency Training Programs opportunity. Program funds are available for Post Flood Emergency Stream Intervention, North Atlantic Aquatic Connectivity Collaborative (NAACC) and Roadside Ditch Maintenance training events.

NYS Department of Health – Creating Healthy Schools and Communities RFA #18371/Grants Gateway #DOH01-CHSCA2-2020 and DOH01-CHSCB2-2020

Applications are sought from organizations to implement a comprehensive, community-based participatory approach to increasing opportunities for physical activity and improved nutrition for people across the age span. Funded organizations will establish and expand local public health efforts to readily implement evidence-based physical activity and nutrition strategies that build on existing community assets and coalitions. This will allow for the flexibility to tailor interventions that meet the unique needs of communities and leverage resources from multiple stakeholders and sectors in high-need communities of New York State.

Grants are available for the expansion and sustainability of the Comprehensive Community Mental Health Services for Children with Serious Emotional Disturbances. The purpose of this program is to improve the mental health outcomes for children and youth, birth through age 21, with serious emotional disturbance (SED), and their families. This program will support the implementation, expansion and integration of the System of Care (SOC) approach by creating sustainable infrastructure and services that are required as part of the Comprehensive Community Mental Health Services for Children and their Families Program (CMHI).

National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative (OREI)

The organization seeks to solve critical organic agriculture issues, priorities or problems through the integration of research, education and extension activities. The purpose of this program is to fund projects that will enhance the ability of producers and processors who have already adopted organic standards to grow and market high-quality organic agricultural products. Priority concerns include biological, physical and social sciences, including economics. The OREI is particularly interested in projects that emphasize research, education and outreach that assist farmers and ranchers with whole farm planning by delivering practical research-based information. Projects should plan to deliver applied production information to producers. Fieldwork must be done on certified organic land or on land in transition to organic certification.

Private Grants

The Retirement Research Foundation (RRF)

The Retirement Research Foundation is one of the first private foundations in the nation devoted exclusively to aging and retirement issues. RRF’s Responsive Grants program supports projects that have a significant focus on older adults, ages 65 and over, in the following areas: advocacy, professional education and training and research. Advocacy projects should advance policy issues of critical importance to our nation’s seniors, such as economic security, health care, housing, etc., use clearly focused and strategic efforts to address systemic problems, or forge partnerships with organizations to achieve better use of resources and to share knowledge. Professional education and training projects should increase the knowledge and skills of professionals and paraprofessionals who serve adults, ages 65 and older; and expand the capacity and number of professionals and paraprofessionals prepared to meet the growing demands of an aging population. Research projects that seek causes and solutions to significant problems facing adults, ages 65 and older, through support of applied and policy research for which federal funding is not available, may be considered for funding.

â–  Eligibility: Tax exempt under Section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code or nonprofit organizations that are not required to have a 501(c)(3) designation, such as state-funded universities. Proposed projects must have a significant focus on older adults, ages 65 and above. Please note that to be considered for funding, advocacy, training and research projects must be intentionally designed to have national relevance. RRF grant funds cannot be used for lobbying efforts to win or defeat any specific pieces of legislation.

Keeling Curve Prize 2020

The Keeling Curve Prize (KCP) is dedicated to activating and accelerating global climate solutions. The KCP awards $25,000 apiece to 10 emissions reduction and/or carbon uptake projects each year across the globe that are reducing greenhouse gas emissions or increasing uptake.

â–  Eligibility: Entries for active projects (not ideas or untested hypotheses) from anywhere in the world are accepted; applicants may be individuals, NGOs, businesses, governments or other institutions. Prizes are awarded for ongoing work only. Incomplete applications or applications that do not attempt to quantify their emissions reductions or financial scalability will not be considered.

â–  Funding: Two prizes of $25,000 will be awarded in each of the following categories: capture and utilization, energy, finance, social and cultural pathways and transport and mobility.

Scholar Awards

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and the National Sea Grant College Program (Sea Grant)

These organizations have partnered to support Ph.D. level students in a focused workforce development program to train highly qualified individuals in population and ecosystem dynamics and marine resource economics. Fellows apply through one of 33 university-based Sea Grant programs for fellowship awards that last two or three years depending on the program of study. Fellows are guided by two mentors, one from the fellow’s university and one from NMFS.

â–  Eligibility: U.S. citizens who are graduate students enrolled in Ph.D. degree programs in academic institutions in the U.S. and its territories

â–  Funding: It is expected that three new fellowships will be awarded in 2020 and contingent on federal funds, in the form of a grant or cooperative agreement for $48,000 per year for salary, living expenses, tuition and travel.
