The verdict in the George Floyd murder trial tonight was a vital and profound step towards justice in America. It is, however, a beginning step towards genuine law enforcement reform to assure all of the citizenry that such tragedies will never happen again. We need to scrutinize the conditions that lead to the horrible abuse of power against people of color and in particular Black Americans. As we strive to eliminate the virus of the pandemic we must simultaneously eradicate the virus of racism. So let us view today’s verdict as a new start, not the conclusion, to a new day in accountable police reform.
