Support the Public Assistance Integrity Act

December 11, 2013

For too long, New York’s public assistance system has abused taxpayers through a loophole that allows benefits to be used on non-essential items like cigarettes, liquor, and lottery tickets. This misappropriation of funds betrays the taxpayers who supply them and the struggling families who truly need assistance. The Public Assistance Integrity Act (Assembly bill 2386), which would close this loophole and restore accountability to taxpayers, has passed the Senate but stalled in the Assembly. If the Assembly fails to act by February 2014, the federal government will penalize New York by cutting federal funding for Cash Assistance by five percent ($120 million).

In order to end taxpayer abuse and protect future funding, we, the undersigned, are calling on the New York State Assembly to pass the Public Assistance Integrity Act at once!
