Assemblyman Stern: We Must Support, Protect New Yorkers with Disabilities
“No one should ever be subjected to discrimination but that’s the sad reality for many of our neighbors living with a disability. Whether it’s an employer or a landlord, too many see the disability before they see the person. We must put a stop to this pervasive and unacceptable discrimination. Today, I was proud to help pass a legislative package that brings us closer to true equality and increases access to vital resources. This includes passing a measure to re-establish the Office of the Advocate for People with Disabilities, which would be a voice for New Yorkers with disabilities and ensure they have the opportunity to exercise their rights (A.10706).
“Our neighbors with disabilities encounter additional challenges during a disaster and were hit especially hard by Superstorm Sandy. This legislative package helps keep them safe by requiring that building owners establish an emergency evacuation plan and counties with local emergency management plans maintain a confidential registry of residents with disabilities who may need assistance or shelter during a disaster that residents have the choice to be included on (A.10201, A.6865). I was proud to enact the ‘Protecting our Most Vulnerable Act’ for Suffolk County residents and this is the next critical step to bring these protections throughout New York State.
“This legislative package continues my commitment and lifelong passion to ensuring equality and safety for people with disabilities on Long Island. As a Suffolk County Legislator, I was proud to deliver results and make a meaningful difference for so many of our most vulnerable neighbors. I’ll keep fighting for more resources, better opportunities and stronger support systems for all New Yorkers with disabilities.”
