Assemblyman Magnarelli Pays Tribute to Volunteer Firefighters at 134th Annual FASNY Convention

Assemblyman Magnarelli (D-Syracuse) attended the 134th Annual Fireman’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) convention and expressed his gratitude to the volunteer firefighters across New York State. The convention was hosted by the Onondaga County Volunteer Firemen’s Convention Committee at the Holiday Inn, August 16th -20th on Electronics Parkway in Liverpool.

Assemblyman Magnarelli was joined by other local officials to recognize the dedication and life threatening duties these firefighters perform every day to protect the lives of citizens in New York State.

“In the New York State Assembly, I have been trying to address the problems that you have as volunteer firefighters,” said Magnarelli. “Whether it is getting fast and free access to the Thruway, or increasing benefits to the families of fallen firefighters, the bottom line is that we want to thank you for risking your lives to protect ours.”

Assemblyman Magnarelli has secured funding from the state for equipment to local fire departments, including the Solvay Fire Department, the Lakeland Fire District and the Baldwinsville Volunteer Fire Company.

“As well as funding for equipment to help these men and women do their jobs, all citizens owe these firefighters our support and gratitude for the important jobs they do everyday.” Magnarelli said.” These men and women help us without getting paid, so we need to remove their personal financial responsibility, which hinders volunteerism.”

Assemblyman Magnarelli supported legislation requiring municipalities to provide liability coverage for volunteer firefighters (A.1600-A); which is awaiting the governor’s signature and legislation giving cost of living adjustments to death benefits for families of volunteer firefighters, (signed chap.246).

“Many firefighters risk their lives as the first line of defense in emergencies, and they should have peace of mind knowing that their families are protected,” Magnarelli stated. “I support these men and women who risk their lives everyday for us and all these efforts are a way to show our gratitude to our volunteer firefighters.”
