5th Annual Lifesaver Blood Drive and Health Fair
June 28, 2011
I am pleased to let you know that the
5th Annual Lifesaver Blood Drive and Health Fair
has been scheduled fornoon until 6 p.m., Tuesday, July 19th
at Gillette Road Middle School, 6150 South Bay Road Cicero, NY 13039.
It has become one of the biggest blood drives in Central New York, in which blood donations during each of the past four years have exceeded 100 pints. Considering an average drive produces about 30 pints, this number is significant. For this reason, and with the urging of Red Cross officials, I determined that this event is far too important to our community to end.
Al Stirpe organized and held this event for the past four years. This year, I dedicated my staff to work on this event, organizing donations, scheduling donors and planning the health fair. The Central New York community benefits greatly from this event, as residents donate their time and blood to help those in need.
Giving blood is one of the most important gifts a person can give and this blood drive is planned during the summer, when there is always a shortage of blood on hand. As a matter of fact, blood donations during this time decrease by 10 to 15 percent, while need escalates because of increased outdoor work and recreational activities. This is another reason why it is very important to continue this blood drive to help save lives.
In addition to the blood drive, there will be a health fair featuring local non-profits and health related agencies. There will also be informational seminars about EPIC and smoking cessation.
To schedule an appointment to donate blood, if you have any questions or need more information, please call 428-9651 or email abdellad@assembly.state.ny.us.
