Assemblymember Lavine Joins Veterans for Special Event at Glen Cove High School
Glen Cove, New York – History comes to life at Glen Cove High School as students get a chance to meet veterans at a special event sponsored by Assemblymember Charles Lavine (D-North Shore).
The event taking place Wednesday (11/8), with students who were selected by the school’s social studies coordinator for their academic achievements and leadership skills. They were matched up with veterans chosen by Glen Cove resident Fred Nielsen, a highly decorated Vietnam veteran, well-known in the community for his extensive work advocating for veterans. The students were able to meet and introduce a veteran to the assembled audience of students and livestream viewers.
As a token of their appreciation, each student presented their veteran with a star from an American flag that is no longer in service while each veteran responded in kind by giving students a pocket constitution.
“I was honored to play a small part in this very special event which gave these fine students the chance to come face to face with living history,” Lavine said. “This event is an opportunity to express to these brave men and women, who risked their lives to fight for our freedom, that we appreciate them,” he added.
