Albany, New York – March Madness is here, and that means in addition to all the fun and excitement it brings, billions will be wagered. The recent explosion of sports betting in the United States has been a boon economically for now legitimized sports book companies, college and professional leagues, and states benefiting from a new tax revenue stream. However, there have been unintended consequences for the athletes themselves, many of whom regularly receive abusive messages ranging from death threats to instances of racism, homophobia, and sexual abuse. It is with this in mind that New York State Assemblymember Charles Lavine (D-North Shore) is sponsoring legislation (A7903B). The bill would protect athletes by banning betting by people who harass amateur or professional athletes, coaches, or officials.

“While sports betting has become a lucrative and popular pastime, its darker consequences cannot be ignored and the mental health of student-athletes, their safety, and their dignity must be preserved,” Lavine said. He added, “it is critical that the NCAA, lawmakers, betting operators, and fans alike work together to ensure that the excitement of sports does not come at the cost of human decency.”
