Assemblymember Lavine Supports Abortion Rights

Glen Cove, New York – Assemblymember Charles Lavine (D-Glen Cove) continues to support the legal battle to protect women’s reproductive rights. Lavine is a founding member of the New York State Bipartisan Pro-Choice Legislative Caucus which filed an amicus brief advocating for abortion rights in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. The filing of the brief follows the U.S. Supreme Court announcement that it will review Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban and recent Texas legislation that bans most abortions. The Mississippi case will be the first direct challenge to Roe v. Wade since Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation and is likely to determine the future of reproductive freedom in the United States. Meanwhile, the conservative-leaning Court has allowed the Texas law to stay in effect while the battle over its constitutionality continues.

“By taking this case, the Court may very well overrule nearly 50 years of precedent that has protected abortion rights. I will always fight to ensure that every woman who needs access to abortion can get the care she needs,” Lavine said.
