Ra Calls for APPR Discussion to Be Driven By Education Stakeholders

“The current Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR) element of the teacher evaluation process has proven to be flawed, time and time again. I stand by my initial opposition to APPR, as many of my concerns with the system have since come to fruition. In light of the governor’s proposed changes to the teacher evaluation system, my concerns have only intensified. However, following comments from New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) president Karen Magee, it appears as though I am not alone.

“I am open to the idea of creating a panel to thoroughly review Gov. Cuomo’s proposed changes to the teacher evaluation process, as long as it includes input from local stakeholders, such as teachers, superintendents, and school boards. This panel should not be limited to handpicked legislators, and instead, must welcome the perspective of individuals who are knowledgeable about the education system, as well as those who are directly affected by such major decisions. That being said, it is also important that any changes to the process be taken up separately from funding issues. Those discussions must be held on their own merits, not tied together. Whether the final decision is to pursue a legislative solution, request that the Board of Regents to develop a solution, or create a panel, there is no question that input from independent stakeholders is an essential part of the conversation.”
