DOT Installs Dinowitz Requested Speed Hump on Independence Avenue
Bronx - Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz (D-Bronx) is pleased to announce that today the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) has begun installing a speed hump on Independence Avenue, in front of the Schervier Apartments between West 227th and West 230th Street. The speed hump was officially approved by the DOT following a traffic study done in August of 2012.
“I have long advocated for a traffic calming measure at this location and I’m glad the DOT has finally taken this necessary step,” Dinowitz said. “Even though Independence Avenue is not the busiest street in the neighborhood, traffic safety in the area is of paramount importance due to all of the pedestrian foot traffic. Many parents with little children that use the park there will feel a lot safer about crossing the street. Installation of the speed hump will also force cars that are coming off the highway at high speeds to slow their acceleration in a more direct manner.
“Additionally, the residents of the Schervier Apartments are all senior citizens or disabled, who often times have difficulty hearing, seeing or walking. The safety and well being of these residents requires that extra measures be taken to ensure their safety, and the installation of this new speed hump should do exactly that. I am pleased that the DOT has put the well being and safety of the community residents first by making Independence Avenue safer for pedestrians.”
