Assemblyman Dinowitz Protests United States Postal Service Removal of Mailboxes
In a letter to Lilliam Rodriguez, the Bronx Postmaster, Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz protested the removal of at least four mailboxes slated to be permanently removed by the USPS by October 8th. These mailboxes include but are not necessarily limited to those at; 3900 Bailey Avenue, the intersection of West 232nd Street and Henry Hudson Parkway, the Intersection of West 238th Street and Tibbett Avenue, and the Intersection of West 261st and Spencer Avenue. All mailboxes now have signs saying that they will be removed by October 8th, less than one month away.
Less than a year ago, many mailboxes were removed with the ostensible purpose of retrofitting them in order to prevent further fishing attempts, which have been perennially plaguing the neighborhood. However, many of the mailboxes removed for retrofitting were never returned, and those that were retrofitted disappeared for a period of many months, leaving seniors without the access to local mailboxes for a long period of time. Now, the neighborhood will be losing even more mail boxes, something that will not only inconvenience seniors, but will have a significant adverse effect on their quality of life.
“As I have mentioned in previous correspondences, senior citizens are uniquely dependent on the traditional post to send mail, for both personal correspondences as well as to pay bills,” said Assemblyman Dinowitz. “I am concerned that if these mailboxes are removed, that the elderly dependent on them will be losing a valuable resource.”
