Jensen Opposed to Legislative Half-Measure Revoking Gov. Cuomo’s Extraordinary Powers

A statement from Assemblyman Josh Jensen (R,C,I-Greece)

“The negotiated agreement between Senate and Assembly Majority is a water-downed half-measure that does not respond to New Yorkers demands that the Legislature rescind Governor Cuomo’s extraordinary executive powers, restore the Legislature as a co-equal branch of government and reinstate local control in responding to the ongoing pandemic,” said Jensen.

“While the proposal limits non-COVID related mandates and eliminates his ability to create new directives, the governor will retain the power to unilaterally and indefinitely extend and change regulations currently in place, imposing limits on everyday life outside the control of local communities or local health experts. More troubling, this legislation eliminates the previously agreed upon end of his powers on April 30th, potentially extending them indefinitely. This is the exact opposite of the action the people of our state are demanding and expecting of the Legislature.”
