Explore Stunning Local Parks, Trails, and Lakes This Summer

A Column from the Desk of Assemblyman Karl Brabenec (R,C-Deerpark)

Picture this: Sunlight filters through lush trees, a cool breeze carries the scent of pine and the trail ahead promises adventure…right here in our 98th Assembly District! Spanning parts of Orange and Rockland counties, our corner of the Hudson Valley is a treasure trove of state and local parks, shimmering lakes and winding trails that draw visitors from New York City and beyond. As your Assemblyman, I’m thrilled to share these natural wonders with you. Let’s seize the summer, explore our backyard and renew our commitment to preserving these spaces for generations to come.

With two grown children, my family always loved exploring new outdoor spots while raising them here. Harriman State Park, New York’s second-largest state park, dazzles with 31 lakes and reservoirs, more than 200 miles of trails, plus beaches, camping areas and boat launches across Orange and Rockland counties. You might even spot our state mammal, the beaver, amid its diverse wildlife. Sterling Forest State Park, spanning nearly 22,000 acres in Orange County’s Ramapo Mountains, protects vital ecosystems and offers hiking, horseback riding, fishing and seasonal hunting.

Local gems abound too. The Brandwein Nature Learning Preserve in Orange County educates on conservation, while Dater Mountain Nature Park in Sloatsburg challenges hikers with rugged paths. The Fitzgerald Falls Trail in Southfields, part of the iconic Appalachian Trail, captivates with scenic beauty, and the 12-mile Pine Meadow Trail loop in Tuxedo Park rewards with sweeping views. For a refreshing dip, Greenwood Lake beckons.

Preserving these spaces drives my work in Albany. In 2019, I co-sponsored the Hudson Valley Community Preservation Act, which passed with strong bipartisan support. This law empowers Orange County communities to fund the protection of open spaces, farmland and natural resources, ensuring our region’s beauty endures. I’ve also supported bills to safeguard water quality and wildlife habitats, reflecting our shared commitment to environmental stewardship.

To plan your outings, visit the New York state parks website (www.parks.ny.gov), Orange County Parks (www.orangecountygov.com/2315/Parks-Recreation), or Rockland County Parks (www.rocklandcountyny.gov/departments/environmental-resources). These resources offer trail maps, park details and activity guides. Our state and local governments collaborate to maintain these treasures, and supporting conservation ensures they thrive.

This summer, let’s hit the trails, paddle the lakes and make memories in our 98th Assembly District. The diverse landscapes of Orange and Rockland counties offer something for everyone: hikers, families and nature lovers alike. Let’s cherish and protect these natural wonders together.

Wishing you a safe, joyful and adventure-filled summer!
