Albany, N.Y. – Today, the New York State Assembly passed Assemblywoman Nily Rozic’s (D, WF-Queens) MTA Safety Reporting Act (A02370/S01238). The bill requires the MTA to submit annual reports on attacks, injuries or deaths reported to or otherwise known to it in connection with its facilities and premises. Assemblywoman Rozic has been working closely with the Transit Workers Union (TWU) Local 100, American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL–CIO), local commuters, and community members since taking office to improve safety in the MTA system. Safety in the MTA has been a major concern for many New Yorkers as there haven been numerous reports of assaults, fatalities, accidents, and thievery in recent years. In particular, data on sexual harassment on subways is made public by neither the MTA nor NYPD.

“I am very proud to see this bill pass the Assembly so that we can make sure the MTA has an accurate procedure of reporting any unsafe condition that occurs in the MTA system,” said Assemblywoman Rozic. “The system serves a population of 15.1 million people and each of the customers and employees deserve to have safe commutes and working conditions. By reporting instances of danger to MTA employees, passengers and other non-passengers, the MTA can establish a means for effective policy to remediate such hazards to such people.”

The “MTA safety data reporting act”: requires the MTA to submit annual reports on assaults, including sexual assaults, attacks, injuries or deaths reported to or otherwise known to it in connection with its facilities and premises; requires a report relating to assaults, including sexual assaults, and attacks on employees and non-employees, and a report relating to physical infrastructure, safety, conditions, security and other health hazards; requires separate tabulations for employees and other persons; requires recommendations to reduce such incidents.
