Assemblyman Scott Bendett (R,C-Sand Lake) was shocked by a recent article from The New York Times claiming New York City has spent tens of thousands of dollars to pay for meals for undocumented migrants through the use of DocGo, a medical services company that won a no-bid, $432 million contract from the city to help provide services and care to arriving migrants. The inexperience of DocGo has carried disastrous consequences, however, as many of the meals provided for migrants are either never eaten or are simply thrown away. Bendett asserts this is a slap in the face to struggling New York families throughout our state.

“I am appalled at the irresponsibility we are seeing in New York City in response to the ever-growing migrant crisis,” said Bendett. “Seeing so many meals wasted in this manner and on this scale, especially during the holiday season, is truly egregious and needs to stop. So many families throughout our state are struggling to make ends meet and put food on the table, yet New York City is happy to spend thousands on undocumented migrants — the fact that many of the meals are ending up in the garbage only adds insult to injury. I hope the New York City Mayor reconsiders this approach, and I hope the governor rethinks spending so much money and resources on migrants when such support could go to New York residents still rebuilding their lives in the wake of COVID-19.”
