South Queens, NY – New York State Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato (D-South Queens) openly praised and publicly thanked NYPD Officers Monica Kim and Thomas Smith from the 100 Precinct for their incredible work in rescuing abandoned and malnourished animals from a home in Broad Channel.

During a recent heatwave, an estimated 10-year-old dog and 6 cats were trapped in a house that had been condemned and had its power shut off. The Assemblywoman’s Office worked with District Leader Jeanette Garamone and numerous neighbors to get the NYPD to help the vulnerable animals. “It was a Friday evening and certain groups weren’t available to respond right away – but these two amazing officers from the 100 Precinct swooped in, got on their hands and knees, and personally rescued these animals. This would have been a tragedy if it wasn’t for Officers Kim and Smith. They’re heroes,” said Assemblywoman Pheffer Amato.

Pheffer Amato reached out to leadership of the NYPD to praise Officers Kim and Smith shortly after they had removed the cats and dog and brought them to a safe location to receive medical treatment. During the recent 100th Precinct Community Council Meeting and National Night Out, Assemblywoman Pheffer Amato awarded Officers Smith and Kim with an official citation commending their bravery and work in rescuing the animals. “Because of you, those animals are alive and will now get a chance to find their furrr-ever home,” Pheffer Amato said while presenting the award.

The dog, Molly, is currently being cared for by Zion’s Mission Animal Rescue in Far Rockaway and the cats are at the Animal Care Center in Brooklyn. All animals are looking for a loving home.
