Pheffer Amato Calls Plan for Shelter in Floyd Bennett Field ‘Disgraceful’
South Queens, NY – New York State Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato (D-South Queens) released the following statement regarding the news of Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, New York, to be used as a shelter for the migrants:
“I am disappointed. I have received confirmation from the Governor’s Office that the Federal Government with the State and the City are disregarding the concerns of our community and plan to erect a migrant shelter for 2,000 men at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn on the de-commissioned air strips. It is disgraceful for this to be done in a secluded and flood prone area without adequate support. This is a national crisis, and the neighborhoods of South Brooklyn and the Rockaway Peninsula cannot bear the responsibility when we already struggle with ensuring our fair share of resources.
I have said it from day one that our State has copious amounts of de-commissioned facilities that could be better equipped to handle this situation. I will continue to fight this with my fellow elected officials and community groups against this. As news continues to come in, I will provide you all with the facts.”
