First Pheffer Amato E-Waste Event Beats Expectations
This past Sunday, March 26th, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato (D-Rockaway) partnered with the Lower East Side Ecology Center at the Rockwood Park Jewish Center to host a e-waste recycling event, allowing residents to drop off their TVs, cellphones, PDAs, computers, keyboards and more without incurring fees from the Department of Sanitation or harming the environment.
“Electronic waste is a major environmental hazard. Too many people just drop computer parts in the garbage,” said Pheffer Amato. “If e-waste isn’t processed the right way, it can poison sanitation workers and our water supply. So that’s why events like these are so important, and why I wanted to host two right here in our community.”
There was a higher-than-anticipated amount of traffic at the event, which collected hundreds of pounds of TVs, computers and more. “I was so encouraged by yesterday – it was a hit!” said Pheffer Amato. “If you missed it, I highly recommend you come down and take advantage of our second opportunity at the Bayswater Jewish Center on Sunday, April 23rd, from 10:00AM to 4:00PM.”
The dropoff opportunities are open to everyone. Accepted items include working and non-working computers, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice, cables, TVs, VCRs, DVD players, phones, audio/visual equipment, cellphones and PDAs.
