Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato (D-Rockaway Beach) presented a proclamation this past Sunday to Lovette Glasgow, a retired schoolteacher, hero of the Civil Rights movement and the former President of the Rockaway NAACP, in honor of Glasgow’s 90th birthday. Glasgow dedicated her life to equity through education, helping found the local Head Start program and serving as a Parent Programmer with the New York City Department of Education for 30 years. She has also been extremely active in the Rockaway community, founding and serving on the board of the Rockaway Community Corporation and the Senior Center at St. Gertrude Church.

“After the 1964 Voting Rights Act, Ms. Glasgow risked her life to register voters,” said Pheffer Amato. “She’s been in the fight since the beginning, and we got the benefit of the rest of her life here on the Rockaway Peninsula. And we still have her to call our own, working in our community and inspiring multiple younger generations, at age 90. I’ve been honored to work with her, to learn from her and to be in her presence as she gives selflessly of herself to our community. I hope we can all follow her example – go boldly, care for those around you and absolutely never stop!”
