South Queens, New York – “Victims of domestic violence endure physical and emotional trauma that most can’t even imagine. It’s crucial that we make New York State a place where they feel safe enough to break away from their abusers and seek justice. Two important laws go into effect this month – fittingly during Domestic Violence Awareness Month – that protect survivors and help them regain their lives and begin the healing process.

“Unfortunately, incidents of domestic violence often go unreported. To combat this dangerous trend, I helped pass a law, now in effect, allowing victims of domestic violence to report an incident to any local law enforcement agency in the state regardless of where it took place (Ch. 152 of 2019). Previously, victims were often forced to return to the jurisdiction where the incident occurred in order to make a report, putting them at further risk.

“Additionally, another law going into effect later this month allows survivors to receive all damages for economic and non-economic losses from any defendant found liable in civil court (Ch. 180 of 2019). This will help more survivors hold their abusers accountable and ensure they get the justice they deserve.

“The Assembly Majority has made it a top priority to protect and empower victims of domestic violence. Last year, the Domestic Violence Escalation Prevention Act became law, which prohibits an individual who has been convicted of a domestic violence crime from purchasing or possessing a firearm (Ch. 60 of 2018). By keeping guns out of the hands of abusers, we can better protect survivors and combat gun violence. I also helped pass the Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act to give judges greater discretion when sentencing defendants who are victims of domestic violence when their abuse was a significant contributing factor in their offense (Ch. 31 of 2019). No one should have to live in fear in their own home. These laws show victims that they’re not alone and will help more victims escape their abuse and begin a brighter chapter of their lives.”

Pheffer Amato’s office is partnering with a local organization to provide victims/families of domestic violence with necessary supplies. Specifically, the organization is in dire need of baby wipes and diapers (any size).
