Albany, New York – Recently, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato (D-South Queens) announced support for the new laws that she helped pass banning single-use plastic bags by grocery stores and other retailers in New York State.

“This law is a step in the right direction and will help ensure that the next generation can enjoy the clean environment they deserve,” Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, said. “I have continuously fought to protect the environment and build a brighter future for our families. Last year, I helped pass the New York State Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, a landmark new law that sets ambitious greenhouse gas emission reduction goals and promotes environmental justice.”

Starting on March 1, the New York State Bag Waste Reduction Act will prohibit grocery stores and other retailers from giving out single-use plastic carryout bags. Some bags are exempt under the new law, such as those used to wrap uncooked meat or seafood, to package bulk items such as fruit or vegetables and to package takeout or deliveries from restaurants. As an alternative to plastic bags, many retailers offer inexpensive reusable bags or paper bags. Paper bags may be subject to a 5-cent fee, with 40 percent of the fee going to municipalities to help distribute reusable bags and 60 percent going toward the Environmental Protection Fund. New Yorkers who qualify for state benefits, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), will be exempt from this fee.
