Assemblymember Grace Lee Touts State Legislation to Protect Immigrant Communities
Today, the New York State Assembly passed a comprehensive package of legislation designed to protect immigrant communities and strengthen government accountability.
Assemblymember Lee said: “Donald Trump and his administration think they can brush aside due process and our justice system to advance a racist, xenophobic agenda. But here in New York, our values are not up for negotiation.
Today, the Assembly has reaffirmed that we are a state for all. By passing this legislative package, we are upholding public safety, supporting the dignity of immigrant communities, and safeguarding our constitutional rights. This landmark bill ensures that state and local resources can’t be weaponized to support federal immigration enforcement. It also keeps ICE out of sensitive locations like healthcare facilities and polling places, allows New Yorkers to sue federal agents who violate their civil rights, prohibits federal agents from wearing masks, and ensures our schools remain safe spaces for children to learn.
We’ve seen the devastating consequences of ICE terrorizing our communities. Families separated, children of immigrants afraid to go to school, and a refugee grandfather abandoned to die on the side of the road.
Today, we are standing up to these abuses and defending New Yorkers. We are holding Trump accountable and making New York safe for all, no matter their citizenship status.”
