Tiles

Tiles
During construction on the East Vestibule’s ramp, workers made a most unexpected discovery – beautiful, original encaustic Minton tiles. Bearing an exquisitely intricate design, these tiles had been thought lost when buried under a foot of concrete in the 1950’s. This surprising find demanded extraordinary precautions be taken to reclaim these priceless artifacts. Each tile was carefully raised and then reset in the floor in front of the two fireplaces at the rear of the Assembly Chamber. The recovery of these unique treasures means Chamber visitors will once again be able to appreciate their remarkable beauty.
